*Please go to FAQ for image resizing tips Protecting the copyright Protecting the copyright of the images is something all photographers think about and consider before posting on any site. You should be assured that Toronto Photo Club and the Administrator, Miriana Mitrovich, are aware of these issues and do not claim any rights whatsoever. We understand that other large sites retain the copyright, hiding this information in their small print, but we feel very strongly that copyright belongs to the creator. Should you wish to put either your logo or name on each image please do so, without overpowering the beauty of your work. We have also disabled right click copy of the images. The size of images is also very small for anyone to use if able to print screen. There are times we may wish to use one of your images at a photography event such as a conference or show, to promote or advertise the Toronto Photo Club site, however, we will ask permission to you directly and request, if you agree, that that you send a large size file for that purpose only. Not only will you be given credit, but we guarantee to use that print one time only. If any photographer is not comfortable granting us one time print right, that decision will be totally respected and of course, respectfully honoured. Categories On the Toronto Photo Club site there are various categories: Abstract is usually "representational" or "figurative" in art. You might say that an "abstract" image only represents its own form, and that form might in some way "represent" some larger concept, but it doesn't represent an object (i.e. the CN Tower). Alternative refers to alternative methods of taking photographs, e.g. non standard or antiquated processing methods (i.e. pinhole photography). Architectural can be broadly considered to encompass views of the exteriors and interiors of domestic, commercial, religious, institutional, and engineering structures. Its aim may be to create either visual documents or expressive images for artistic or publicity purposes. Advertising are photos made to illustrate a service or product. Computer Art is the production of an image through the use of imaginative skill or originality of thought including the altering of reality. An image could look realistic, provided it shows originality of concept. Creative images may include modifications in the darkroom or on the computer. Fashion/Glamour: Fashion is a genre of photography that is devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion and is most often shot for advertisements or fashion magazines. Glamour is a genre of photography where the subjects are portrayed in a romantic way. The subjects may be fully clothed or seminude. Landscape, as part of Nature photography, is a section or portion of scenery as seen from a single viewpoint. Scenery is the subject of a landscape image. Typically, people and animals are not shown in a landscape, unless they are relatively small in the image and have been included in the composition to show scale. Some photographers argue that the sea coast, the city and man-made structures in general should not be included as a landscape, and images that do contain them are more accurately called seascapes or cityscapes. From a purist perspective, they are probably correct, since a landscape is a picture of the land and its aggregate natural features. However, if natural scenery dominates an image, it can probably be accurately termed a landscape, even though there may be a farmhouse in the distance, a city skyline on the horizon or a road or path in the foreground. Macro is taking extreme close-up images of subjects. The technically correct definition would be to take an image at a 1:1 ratio but, in general usage, the term has come to mean any close-up photography. Nature/Wildlife refers to a wide range of photography taken outdoors and devoted to displaying natural elements such as wildlife, plants, and close-ups of natural scenes and textures. Nature photography tends to put a stronger emphasis on the aesthetic and story-telling value of the photo than other photography genres. Nude photography as an art form is a stylized depiction of the nude body with the line and form of the human figure as the primary objective. Photographers sometimes use extremes of light and shadow, oiled skin, and shadows falling across the body to show texture and structure of the body. *The administrator/moderators will closely watch the content in this category. They have the right to delete, without warning, pictures without esthetic values. It is absolutely prohibited to publish nude photos of persons under the age of 18 and pictures with pornographic content! The authors of such pictures will be deleted without warning! Photo Journalism shall consist of pictures with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The journalistic value of the photograph shall be considered over pictorial quality. The primary concern is to make story-telling and/or newsworthy photographs. Portrait or portraiture is the capture of the likeness of a person or a small group of people (a group portrait), in which the face and expression is predominant. The objective is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the subject. Sport refers to the genre of photography that covers all types of sport. Still Life is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them. Street / Urban includes any photograph made anywhere in public places. Some photographers narrow it down to urban settings and some think there must be people present in these kinds of photos. But the bottom line is that each street photographer will find their own meaning and approach. Therefore, whatever definition they might arrive at will work just as well. Travel must express the feeling of a time and place, portray a land, its people or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographic limitations. The title should give the location and complement the travel story. Underwater is considered an especially challenging area, since it requires very specialized equipment and techniques to be successful. Animals such as fish and marine mammals are the most common subjects, but photographers also pursue shipwrecks, submerged caves, underwater "landscapes", and portraits. Wedding Photography is the photography of activities relating to a wedding. It encompasses photographs of the couple before marriage (for announcements, portrait displays, or thank you cards) as well as coverage of the wedding and reception. *In cases of non compliance between the picture and the category in which it is published, the administrator and/or moderators of the site have the right to move it to another category without the consent of the author.
